Calculating Drapery and Fabric Weight
1) Fabric
Weight - Some
fabric samples list on the back of the swatch the weight listed in Ounces/SqYd (Ounces per Sqaure Yard).
Call the manufacturer for the weight if not listed anywhere.
2)
Lining Weight – Most drapery linings are 2oz - 4oz - Per Square
Yard.
·
Finding Drapery Weight Formula:
Total Square Yards = (Total Yards x 36 x
Fabric Width) ÷ 1296 (1-Sqaure Yard)
Weight = Total Square Yards x Weight in
ounces per SqYd) ÷ 16 oz in 1 Lb
Example: 32 Yards of 54” wide fabric weighing 14 oz/SqYd
Total Square Yards = (32 x 36 x 54)= 62,208 ÷ 1296 = 48 SqYds
Weight
= (48 x 14oz) = 672 ÷ 16 = 42 Lbs
·
Finding Lining Weight Formula:
Total Square Yards = (Total Yards x 36 x
Fabric Width) ÷ 1296 (1-Sqaure Yard)
Weight
= Total Square Yards x Weight in ounces per SqYd) ÷ 16
oz in 1 Lb
Example: 32 Yards of 54” wide lining weighing 6 oz/SqYd
Total Square Yards = (32 x 36 x 54)= 62,208 ÷ 1296 = 48 SqYds
Weight = (48 x 4oz) = 192 ÷ 16 = 12 Lbs
